How To: Layer Like A Pro

Lark and Wolff Dress, Zara Jacket (Last year, Similar), H&M Sweater and Bag, Forever 21 Scarf, Joe Fresh Tights, Aldo Booties, Urban Outfitters Hat

There IS a strategy to layering. Mixing textures, prints and piling on accessories are how to do it; though you can go overboard really quickly. I tend to do it a lot where I look a tad too hobo chic, or too many pieces I get frustrated and want to rip everything off in public. Which is why I tend to carry a bag bigger than my head, see below.

Many women are afraid of layering because they fear looking frumpy and larger than they are. But the key is to pick pieces that are right and flattering for you! Don’t look at Mary Kate and Ashley’s oversized men’s coats, large knit scarf and bug sunglasses if those shapes, cuts and sizes are proportioned. As much as layer falls into the over-sized category the size can still “fit” you and your figure.

 Start with a basic:

I always layer this dress because it’s a soft comfy linen that can withstand any shape, colour, or print on top. It’s a bit oversized so everything else I pair will be fitted, until it comes to the accessories. If you’re afraid of looking frumpy, stick to one item being oversized.

Add texture:

In my last post I mentioned I’m obsessed with anything furry/fuzzy/textured; just give it to me. Back on track, add a texture. Something to amp up your basic for when you take off your outerwear. I have this in the short and long version from H&M, duh, go get yours.

 A figure shaping piece:

Who doesn’t have a black leather or faux leather jacket these days? If you don’t you’re not living in this century. Zara makes it easy with tons of styles and cuts to fit any shape. Where to invest in a killer leather jacket: Mackage, Danier, Rudsak.  The biker style I find the best because it always has great extras like quilting, zippers and clips, to add a little “oomph”. Have one piece in the layering mix that gives you some shape and is fitted as to not lose your figure in all of your layers.

Add a print:

Usually I add my fuzzy vest over top of my leather jacket, but because I already have a fuzzy pink sweater on I figured that was a tad of an overload! Instead, a super comfy sweater that doubles as a blanket is my other go-to. Complete with a hood, it adds an extra layer of warmth when my jacket can’t keep up with Toronto’s ever-changing weather.

Accessories are the finishing touch to your layered ensemble. If you don’t like to layer too much, your accessories can fake it for you. A bag that doubles as luggage, a wide-brimmed hat and large scarf will set you apart from the other layering queens of Toronto.

American Horror Story: Coven was super inspirational fashion wise and inspired me to put this outfit together. The Steve Nicks, modern gothic, all black everything vibe was everything and anything on the show. My sense of style and eye for fashion has always come from more than just magazines. It comes from music, girls and guys I see on the street, movies/TV, art etc. Although my style I would hope to say has progressed for the better over the years, I still have much of the same sense of inspiration and people I Google, books I look at, or old fashion inspo boards I make and reference back to. Some of them include: Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, MK and Ashley Olsen, Jane Birkin, Carrie Bradshaw, Blogger Jules Sarinana, Kate Moss, Jean Harlow, Michael Jackson, Anna Wintour, Nicole Richie, Zosia Mamet, the girls of HAIM, and soooo many more. When I get stuck in the morning I look through photos for a spark. Thanks to Pinterest, it’s even easier and I can always go back to an outfit I loved!
